Google Mail
Google Mail (also known as Gmail) is most recommended, but requires invitation from a current Google Mail user. To receive such an invitation you must already have an email address with some other email service.

Advice on registering with an email service provider
Be especially careful about the security of your email account because it probably contains enough information to hack any other online accounts that you may have.
Use trusted services
If you intend to register with services like PayPal and other online banks, be especially careful to use only the email services of highly trusted organisations.
Don't use guessable passwords
Choose a password that's not easy to guess, even by someone who knows you well. Be sure that the secret answers to your security questions are no less guessable. Hackers will often guess the answer to a security question based on what they know about the victim before even attempting to guess the main password.
Try not to use the same passwords for everything you sign up for. Otherwise, if someone hacks one of your accounts they can easily hack the rest too.
